In reality how likely is pregnancy without penetration? especially if it was not during ovulation?

Unlikely: it is very uncommon. It is possible. But ejaculation would need to occur very close to the vagina within being inside. Most sperm will not survive the environment so the chance of pregnancy is extremely low
