A member asked:

Can pregnancy without corpus luteum is possible if yes then what about hcg which maintains pregnancy ? also please share best sites for medical lectur

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Complicated!: The corpus luteum secretes progesterone which prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation and supports the first trimester of pregnancy. HCG supports the corpus luteum, helps protect the fetus from attack by the mother's immune system and promotes growth of placental blood vessels into the uterus. Both hormones are vital in early pregnancy. (www.nhs.uk: "pregnancy & baby.")
