A member asked:

Can we treat severe protein deficiency just by adding more protein in our diet?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

That's the 1st rx: You don't get to that stage by eating a balanced diet. You would be consuming an excess of carbs and or fats with little protein and or starving so much your body was converting your muscles to sugar to keep you alive.Gradually increasing the caloric intake, including protein would be the first stage of treatment.Re-feeding too fast can trigger "refeeding"syndrome. This should be supervised.
