PCR, culture, blood: If there is a herpes lesion (blister, ulcer, etc), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HSV DNA is best. A culture test is OK, but misses more cases. Both are on swab specimens. If no lesions, blood test for HSV antibody. But due to controversial recommendations of Public Health Canada, blood tests are less available in your country than all others. Blood takes a few weeks to turn positive.

Acute vs. past: A blood test will tell, if an individual has been exposed to the herpes virus in the past. A swab from lesions will tell if they are caused by the herpes virus.
