Halitosis: has many causes, one of which is problems with digestion. At two years old he is probably getting new teeth, and with that the bacteria present in the mouth can change since the gum tissue only attaches at the neck or the tooth so there may be times when there are different bacteria that can flourish in deeper crevices around newly erupted teeth. Carbs are the only things digested in the mouth.

Can't tell: Bad breath may be dental (cavities, infected gums, etc) or medical (tonsillitis, GI disturbances, etc.). Start w Dentist, in particular a Pedodontist, a children's dental specialist. At 2 your son is at least a year overdue for a Dental check-up.

Probably not: Consider having him see an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) He may have enlarged tonsils and adenoids which cause him to mouth breath, which leads to bad breath. Other symptoms of enlarged tonsils and adenoids include snoring and drooling on the pillow.
