What were the effects of chernobyl on the health of the people in the area?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Minimal: Most were evacuated almost immediately. A few workers developed bone marrow suppression and died. The workers that shielded the doomed plant were well protected with no known problems. Long term studies have show no increase in nearby folks of thyroid cancer or leukemia. The area is now uninhabited and being taken over by unchecked nature.
