Several: By prescription, codeine or hydrocodone are the best cough suppressants but they are controlled substances with side effects and potential for abuse and addiction. Benzonatate is good, available by prescription, and is not a controlled substance. Dextromethorphan is available over the counter but is weaker. A vaporizer sometimes helps. Time is the most effective treatment for acute cough.
