Irregular menses: Menstrual flow isn't always bright red. Color depends upon flow rate as well as oxidation duration. Irregular menses are common in young women. Discuss birth control options w/your Family Doc, GYN or Planned Parenthood. Hormonal birth control pills often used to regulate menses.

A 21-year-old female asked:

Could brown discharge replace your period for a month? Is it normal?

Not normal: It isn't normal to have a small amount of brown discharge for a month, but it isn't uncommon either. A gynecologist can tell you if there is an infection or other cause of discharge.
