Test for blood first: Black stool might be caused by blood which may be due to a serious problem like an ulcer. A simple test can determine if the stool contains blood. Colonoscopy can be helpful when evaluating stools containing blood if an upper endoscopy (EGD) does not show a source of the bleeding.

Black Stool: Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) causes your stool to be black. It really depends on your history of what is going on. If someone does have black stool and they did not just take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) for instance, they should see their doctor for a consultation to determine what is appropriate to do next.
