Abscess: This is not normal but not necessarily a big problem. It could most likely be a small bone fragment or root fragment that it working its way out. This happens from time to time. It doesn't mean anything bad about your dentist. Just call your dentist and go in for a quick follow up. It probably isn't a anything serious but it does require follow up just to make sure.

Abscess: Is it a surface lesion such as a canker sore, or a deep infection that is draining to the surface? See your Dentist to evaluate lesion and to provide appropriate treatment. Also talk to Dentist about appropriate treatment to replace missing tooth. Failure to replace can result in shifting.
