Gravity/salt: Assuming that you do not have any other symptoms to suggest heart, kidney, liver disease, etc; fluid retention in the legs occurs after standing upright for long period of time. Muscle contraction helps venous blood return, but sometimes the force of gravity causes pooling in the veins and some leakage. Too much salt in the body can also increase the total body water and therefore worsen swelling
