Antacid: For instant relief from heartburn an antacid like TUMS or ROLAIDS work the fastest. For persistent heartburn you can use OTC Zantac (ranitidine). Avoid Prilosec as it can lead to rebound hyperacidity and dependence. You should consult your physician if your have persistent heartburn and OTC meds don't help. Lifestyle measures.: Smaller more frequent meals. Elevate head of bed from the floor. Don't eat within four hours of going to bed. Limit citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, tomato products, smoking and peppermint. Lose weight if you're overweight. OTC meds like Prevacid, Prilosec and AcipHex (rabeprazole).
