It depends: Sporadic, isolated muscle jerks (myoclonus) are common and often happens at the onset of sleep. However, there are some metabolic conditions which may trigger it (eg kidney/liver failure) and I personally believe that chronically low oxygen levels (eg with emphysema or severe sleep apnea) can cause it too.
