Muscle: Usually this is due to muscle spasm or small muscle strain. Less commonly may be due to nerve entrapment or impingement. Generally, it is a transient phenomenon. Working on neck flexibility (yoga) may help, but be cautious not to exacerbate inflammation by "over doing it". Application of heat may help, as may nsaids (ibuprofen, Aleve (naproxen) etc) if no contraindications exist.
