Active bone marrow: The human body fights infections by raising its temperature which in turn increases metabolism and by increasing the number of white blood cells that fight the germs. However, increased number of blood cells can also be encountered without infection or fever when the bone marrow is activated to produce more cells for a variety of other reasons including leukaemia.
