Dr. Sarah Kohl answered

Injury for long time: Post concussion syndrome occurs when concussion symptoms, typically headache, dizziness, fatigue, and poor concentration, last longer than 6-8 weeks. The condition is not well understood, so our understanding is being updated regularly. Current treatment focuses on relieving symptoms while the brain heals. Often a brain rehabilitation specialist is involved in developing the treatment plan.

Also you have to be careful not to get another concussion while one is healing since this can potentially cause second impact syndrome.

A 29-year-old member asked:
What can you do to deal with post-concussion syndrome?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Amir Khan answered
Sports Medicine 27 years experience
Get educated: Talk to a specialist and get educated. Stop what caused the concussion. Consider meds such as Aspirin and other pain relievers to mitigate headaches and migraines. Certain medications can fight memory loss and decreased motor skills. No single medication will tackle all side effects. Consider acupuncture, even electro-therapy. And other therapy and treatment options . Symptoms can last for years.

Yes: Post concussion syndrome although usually short lived, days to weeks, following a concussion can in a minority of patients last for over a year. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia , difficulty concentrating, noise and light sensitivity. If you have not already had further diagnostic studies such as MRI and possibly neuro psych testing would consider. See neurologist.

Individualized: Outcomes vary from person to person. The leading thought is to monitor with neuropsych testing until normal. Normal implies not just no headache but no symptoms of any kind.
