Infection control: So you have a bad viral cough. With one week of symptoms, I agree with your assessment. You should see symptoms diminishing incrementally every day from here on. After one week, if you have no fever, and symptoms are not getting worse, you are probably past the greatest period of viral shedding. So go live your life, wash hands frequently, and cover your cough. If you get worse, see your doc!

Not sure of question: Contagiousness, probably not contagious. After a lung inflammatory event like a virus, the lung stays inflamed up to a month(although I find monteleukast lowers the time). Safety. Along with this, people are more susceptible to other lung irritants like weather/cold/smoke/exercise.
