Peritonsillar absces: Bacterial sore throats (pharyngitis) rarely will turn into a peritonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess (infection behind the lining of the throat. These can be extremely dangerous and should be treated quickly. If you have one sided neck pain after a prolonged sore throat, this could be the case. Please see your doctor or go to the ER if you are having high fevers or intense pain.
