Gardasil indications: Merck, the vaccine manufacturer, recommends vaccination for people age 9-26 for prevention of some of the strains of HPV that cause genital warts and certain cancers. It will not treat the infection if it has already been transmitted, but may offer protection from getting infected with other strains.

Hard to say: HPV is a family of viruses that includes dozens of strains. The most recent vaccine helps develop protection from the 9 strains most often linked to things that bother us, but there are other strains. The vaccine is the best protection we have, but it is no guarantee that sometime in the future we will find another strain that causes problems.
