A member asked:

What are causes of stomach flu and risks for elderly residents in a rcfe? how could it have been prevented? length of time of this illness?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stomach flu: is caused by a virus, like norovirus. But in an RCFE I'd also be worried about the bacteria C. difficile. It can be prevented with careful and frequent hand washing among the residents and staff, and keeping contaminated items from being shared. A viral stomach flu lasts as long as 2 weeks, but a C. difficile infection can last longer.
