Why are blood clotting inhibitors commonly included into atherosclerosis treatment?

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Blood thinners: Heart disease comes in 2 flavors similar to plumbers & electricians. Atherosclerosis is blockage of arteries by cholesterol akin to clogged plumbing. So in addition to cholesterol lowering medications, we often recommend blood thinners such as aspirin etc to minimize abrupt blockage of arteries. We also use stronger blood thinners eg warfarin, in atrial fibrillation to prevent strokes.
