It Varies: Nowadays this is called dissociative personality disorder. It is exceedingly rare. One would expect these people to have been seriously victimized during their early development. One would expect them to react with dissociation & depersonalization when challenged by a significant stressor. This is the feeling that you are not really there as if watching yourself in a movie.

Missing time: If the person reports blocks of missing time, i.E: not remembering how one got somewhere or "what happened to this afternoon" it is suggestive for one of the dissociative disorders. An evaluation by a mental health professional is really important. Of course, being honest in the evaluation is also important.

Multiple personality: MPD, now called dissociative identity disorder is characterized by two or more distinct identity states known as alters in addition to the patient him/her self. These identity states will seem fragmentary and partially unaware of the others, each with varying degrees of disturbance, The alters tend to be more active and aggressive, while the patient's core personality will be more passive.
