May need follow-up: This could be a hemorrhoid since you had to force the bowel movement. If it continues you need to see a Physician. Make sure you are eating plenty of fiber in your diet and drinking plenty of water.

Hard to say: If your stools are occasionally hard,bulky or infrequent, you could develop a crack in the anal opening that would layer bright red blood on the outside surface of any stool. Blood from higher up in the colon or gut is usually darker. Blood mixed within the stool is more worrisome. A few things like red Hawaiian punch often retain red coloring through the gut.Your doc should sort it out.
