Death rate is 5-10%,: up to 20% in patients <age 5 & > age 40 from infections caused by toxin-producing strains of Corynebacterium Diphtheriae. It was endemic in San Antonio, TX, when I worked there. There is tissue damage. A grayish pseudomembrane covers the tonsils & throat &, sometimes, the larynx. It can obstruct the airway. The toxin damages the heart & paralyzes the soft palate eyes, limbs & diaphragm. Immunize!
