Depends on situation: In some cases the fetal material may be infected or unresponsive to a hormonal induction & require surgical removal. In early pregnancy, it often sheds without help as a miscarriage. Later removal can be assisted by meds applied to the cervix & induction. Sometimes, the physician must assist the process with a dilation & curettage where remaining debris is removed manually.
