Lifelong issue: In the pre-vaccine era, 70% of women attending college health clinics tested positive for some strain of HPV by their Sophomore year. Those with visible features like warts may have clearance of visible lesions but the virus can persist within the tissues for decades. Those with no visible lesions can lay dormant for decades before emerging to trigger cancerous change.
