Suggest impairments.: The Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination (SLUMS) is a short test (screening) done by doctors to diagnose dementia. These tests are usually pretty easy and the questions explore basic attentional, memory, reasoning skills. The test has a maximum score of 30 pts; a score of 16 indicated that the person has significant problems in the areas mentioned above which might indicate dementia.

Not specific...: ...for vascular dementia, but for dementia whatever the cause. A score of 16 is associated with the diagnosis of dementia. Note that this is a screening test, and more formalized cognitive evaluation should be performed (neuropsychometric testing) for making a diagnosis of dementia.
