Pregnancy test: From a gynecologic standpoint, when a woman misses her period, a pregnancy test should be done as a first step to determine that the woman is not pregnant. A pregnancy should be detected early to make sure it is properly located, i.e, in the womb, and not in the fallopian tubes. The latter would be a potentially life threatening condition. Hormone studies by a doctor can be done down the line.
