MRI can miss masses: In my experience, the most common soft tissue mass missed on MRI is a lipoma, a benign tumor made up of cells containing fat, which look very like the surrounding fat surrounding on MRI. The thin capsule may not be visible. Numbness may be due to pressure on nerve. Other tumors such as schwannoma are less often not easily seen on MRI. A surgeon is often the best person to evaluate these lesions
