Try something else: Neither Claritin (loratadine) nor Sudafed should have enough anticholinergic effect to stop a runny nose if that is the primary problem. Chlorpheniramine is an older generation antihistamine that may help, but beware of warnings on the label. Sinus saline irrigation may help more than you'd think. Otherwise, need to discuss with a physician to better characterize your rhinitis to guide effective treatment

Runny nose meds: If the runny nose is from infection, antihistamines don't help and should not be taken. They slow improvement and resolution of infections. If the runny nose is from allergies, zyrtec + Allegra are stronger than Claritin. Sprays: Afrin (oxymetazoline) opens swollen passages quickly; Nasacort/Flonase decrease inflammation over several days; azelastine dries secretions but requires prescription+ use only 4 allergy.

See allergist: There are other causes for runny nose than allergy and thus you should consider an allergist to help you sort this out and provide you with the proper medication to control it. If you have had a head injury recently and the drainage is unilateral and clear, be sure to let your doctor know.
