What do doctors do to detect stress as the reason for my stomach pains?

First rule out dz: Doctors must first take a thorough history from you, do a full physical examination, appropriate lab work and other studies as indiciated to rule out disease as causing your pain. Stress is a diagnosis of exclusion, and your own observations about the pain as it relates to stress would be very important in nailing down this reason as the cause.
