How long can it take for a healthy person to develop stage 4 cancer?

Hard to Know: Many healthy people get cancer. Stage IV just means that the cancer has spread around the body away from where it started (metastases). Some cancers spread around the body very early and the tumor where it started might be small and asymptomatic by the time that the metastases are detected. Fast growing cancers probably start 2-6 mo before diagnosis. Slow ones probably take a few years.
