Depends: if you're referring to using a condom to prevent passage of HPV or genital warts, technically never. The chances of transmission are lower if you have no active (visible) lesions, but there will never be a time or a method 100% safe from transmission of this viral infection. Note that many people (esp. men) are carriers of the virus but have no symptoms. So your BF may have it already. Good luck-

Get checked again: If you had HPV on a past test you should followup and get tested again. In women, HPV is a transient infection. In other words it usually goes away unless there is immune compromise, like HIV infection. Sometimes it can persist but that is unusual. Men however can be carriers and that can be on the testicles. As far as condoms, they can protect against HIV, but they don't work very well for HPV.
