Yes: You can make a pretty accurate diagnosis with a history and physical but an x-ray or M.R.I.s needed to confirm degree particularly if surgery will be contemplated.

X-ray: an x Ray is a good cheap first test to perform to evaluate for arthritis. It can show joint space narrowing or any sort of cortical erosion.
