Couldn't hurt: Back pain can be serious or benign. It could be just a muscle spasm. However, it could be worse things such as a UTI, pancreatitis, kidney stone, or many other things that would require further treatment.

Acute Lt Mid Back Pn: Wait. Try OTC topicals (Aspercreme, Biofreeze, Bengay, China Gel, etc.) localized to your area of acute pain. Try some ice in addition to the OTC topicals. If no help with topicals and no medical contraindications (cardiac, GI, kidney, or lung),then a NSAID like Ibuprofen might be an option. Stay WELL BELOW 2400mg/day. If no liver issues, can try Tylenol (acetaminophen). Stay WELL BELOW 3000mg/day.
