Several differences: While both are viruses, they are different classes and do different things. Herpangina is coxsackie virus which attack soft palate/throat and is self limiting within 10 days. Herpes initially can occur throught the entire mucose (primary herpetic gingivostomatitis) but recurrence usually is localized to the lips and peeioral skin. Likewise it is self limiting.
