Is an eating disorder always characterized by binging and purging?

Can be insidious...: Per International Journal of Eating Disorders (6/2012): 13% of American woman over 50 experience symptoms of an eating disorder; 60% report that their concerns about weight & shape negatively affect their lives; & 70% are currently trying to lose weight. These figures mirror the rates found among teens & young women. May closely link to depression, anxiety, social isolation & can be deadly.

No: Bulimia involves bingeing and purging (through vomiting, laxatives, exercise or restricting). Anorexia involves restricting (with a subtype of purging), and Binge Eating Disorder is eating large quantities of food at once. These behaviors are only part of the clinical picture, as a person's self-esteem, ways of coping, and attitudes towards relationships and conflicts are part of the diagnosis.
