A member asked:

Is it dangerous if a child eats mud?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: This varies with the quantity and content of the mud. Since there are likely plenty of bacteria in the mud, the material may cause gastrointestinal disease. The quantity could also sludge up the digestive tract. I have seen the former but never seen the later issue. Some "pica" or ingestion of non food items is common in kids in the toddler years.
