Motor weakness: Polio is predominantly a disease of the motor nerve cells of the brain stem and spinal cord. It presents with extremities that are weak or paralyzed. When the brain stem is involved a person may be unable to breath for themselves and need mechanical ventilation. In many cases presentation may be with headache or altered mental status, indicating the infection also effects the brain.
