Not surprising: Infections with HSV type 1, which causes cold sores, also called herpes labials, are very common. Once infected, with the medications we have available at this time, the virus cannot be eradicated. Some individuals, while infected, never get an outbreak, but can spread the virus. With changes in sexual mores and practices, doctors more and more see genital herpes caused by HSV-1.
