Specificity: Cramps refers to a specific type of pain (usually gastrointestinal, menstrual) in which the pain comes in pulses and builds up to an intense stabbing then temporarily recedes, only to return. Examples would be gas pains or menstrual cramps or bad cramping from diarrhea. Pain on the other hand is a general term for all things painful. All cramps are pain... Not all pains are cramps.
