New Pain: Pain is the body telling you something is wrong. Often times lower leg pain in new runners is from a training error(ex. Too much too soon, hills, etc.) you need to prepare the body for running if you are going to use the running as a conditioning tool. Shin splints can give this pain and you need to have a professional examin the legs. Good luck...Often the answer is a short bout of directed p.T.

Can be!: As a new jogger you may be sore just as a normal course of exercise. You could also have over done it and caused sprain/strain, shin splints, tendonitis or micro trauma. If it feels like normal sore muscle, ice, massage with liniments, Motrin and dont increase distance or speed until resolved. If it feels worse than you would expect stop running and walk/give it a rest along with above treatment.

Shin splints.: Sounds like shin splints to me. The muscles that run along the shin are relatively small and weak, and get overloaded easily when one starts jogging. If this is what you're experiencing, stick with it and your discomfort should fade. If it doesn't, visit your doctor to be sure there's no circulatory or nerve issue, though.
