May be infection: This does happen. You are not imaging it. The coppery smell is because the blood being shed contains iron, which smells coppery to you. Menstrual cycles may smell different at different times due to the amount of old blood left in the vagina, hormone levels, and even the type of sanitary pads used. If the malodor persists even after your cycle, it could be a condition called BV which needs meds.
