Yes: If used fot acutely suicidal pts who can't wait for meds, pts who haven't responded to meds, or pts where Meds might be a risk--pregnant, cardiac, post stroke, etc--u very safe & can be life saving!

Agree with Dr Bey: ECT is not used for garden variety depression. But as stated earlier if can be very important in cases with recalcitrant depression, depression with psychotic symptoms. markedly suicidal patients with depression, etc, etc. However, in the United States, there are different laws in each state which regulate use of ECT. So, one can't simply ask for ECT - they must meet specific criteria.
