Mallet finger: this is definitely normal. 6 weeks of finger extension in a splint is necessary for the distal extensor tendon to heal. The soreness is apart of the healing process. Be patient. Things will get better

Mallet finger: I typically recommend 8 weeks of full time and 4/6 weeks of night time and part time activity splinting on the distal joint only . You can work with a mallet finger that is splinted . Dirk nowitzki played in the 2011 nba finals with this injury. But he had a full time trainer to take care of him http://handcenterwma.Blogspot.Com/2011/06/mallet-finger-baseball-finger.Html.

Yes: This is not unusual. Recovery can take up to 3 months.
