Probably normal: The brown discharge indicates a very little bit of blood is being lost from the uterus even before the recognized "period". Periods are controlled by varying levels of estrogen and Progesterone that rise and fall sequentially. Each month that pregnancy doesn't occur, the endometrium is shed as a bloody flow. Sometimes the shedding begins a little early due to the hormonal variation. See above.
