A member asked:

Can clamydia be "asleep" for 2-3 years and not show on vaginal smear?

Chlamydia awakening: Chlamydia wasn't dormant, rather a specific culture for the organism was not done. A vaginal pap smear will not show the organism. About 40 % of women are asymptomatic for chlamydia when exposed and the infection can permanently block the Fallopian tubes even if belatedly treated.

No: Without treatment, chlamydia is cleared from the genital tract by the immune system, nearly always within a year. And the standard chlamydia tests are very sensitive; if infection is present, it will be detected. So for both reasons -- passage of time, negative test -- you can be sure you don't have it. Your age also is in your favor: chlamydial infections are quite rare after age 30.
