Bacterial vaginosis: The most common cause of vaginal itching is bacterial vaginosis, it is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Another common cause is yeast infection, again not an STD. Both are easily treated but it is not always easy for a woman to tell which she has. A diagnosis can be made by looking at vaginal secretions under a microscope to guide treatment. Using OTC yeast medicine will make BV worse.
