I was diagnosed with sjgren's my symptoms are pretty mild but the doctor says plaquinil will prevent progression of the disease. is this really true?

Yes: Placquenil has helped several other autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. It is generally used for milder forms such as you have, and I personally have seen patients controlled for many years with this medication. It is classified with the disease altering drugs.
