Cervical disc: Cervical disc disease or a herniated cervical disc often cause pain off and on as you describe. Inflammation and/or movements in the neck can cause more pressure on the nerve resulting in pain. This is usually diagnosed with an MRI. Treatment options include epidural steroid injection or surgery.
